30/08/2013 - HTML5 and CSS3

Our websites are designed for our customers in West Sussex using HTML5 and CSS3 so we thought it would be helpful to explain what this means and why we do it.

HTML5 is the latest incarnation of the HTML standard. It has been designed to reflect the way in which we use modern websites, for example rich media content and cross-platform mobile compatibility.

Website users are increasingly using new ways to access websites, with different browsers, mobile phones, tablets and even televisions. It is estimated that there will be 1 billion HTML5 compatible phones sold in 2013. HTML5 allows us to reach these users with stylish, functional websites that work across multiple devices, operating systems and browsers so that all of your customers will be able to enjoy and benefit from your website.

The latest versions of the mainstream browsers support the majority of the HTML5 and CSS3 features, however not everyone has a compatible browser. This can be a problem when designing websites so it is necessary to accommodate these browsers by using JavaScript to recreate these features.

CSS is used to style the HTML, it allows us to instantly change the appearance of a website and with the introduction of CSS3 we can recreate some of the effects that would usually require a designer and Photoshop. This makes the process of designing and creating a website quicker and so keeps our low monthly costs even lower.

HTML5 is certainly the future of web design and together with CSS3 we can create some fantastic websites. Unfortunately we have to do a bit of extra work at the moment during the transition from HTML4 to HTML5, but this means that everyone can enjoy our websites and those with a HTML5 compatible browser get an even better user experience.

14/08/2013 - The Importance of SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and refers to the process of optimising a website or web page so that search engines such as Google can find and index the content and therefore display the website on peoples search results.

For most people the aim of SEO is for their website to appear at the top (or as close to the top as possible) of Google for the search terms that best describe the services that their website is offering. Why? The reason for this is that over 80% of all searches are performed using Google and without appearing on Google search results, most people won't be able to find your website.

It doesn't matter how brilliant your website is, without SEO people will not be able to find your website. SEO must be built into a website whilst it it being developed and it’s also important to point out that a website is never finished, it must be regularly updated to ensure that it keeps its current ranking and if possible improves upon it.

13/08/2013 - Introducing Eclectic Web

This is our first blog post so we thought it would be a good idea to start by explaining who we are and what we do.

Eclectic Web are a new company, based in West Sussex, England. We knew how important an online presence is to any small business but realised that the initial cost of designing, building, hosting a new website can be too much for many businesses. We then came up with the idea of creating websites for free and charging a low monthly fee to maintain it. This evolved into our current, contract-less, model. We decided that if our customers could leave us at any time, they would know that we would continue to monitor and improve their website and so avoid the common issue of websites that become outdated and abandoned
